Position Statements on Issues
Laura Macias Stands up for:
Smart Growth Neighborhoods
- I support residential development that integrates all smart growth principles especially those of “context” that is, “fit” within the neighborhood. I will approve good development and reject poorly-designed development as I have in the past.
- I first proposed the rewrite of the San Antonio Center plan to design a “village” instead of plopping down an industrial home-improvement store.
- I actively engaged with neighbors and concerned families to disallow another fast food drive-thru and an adult store that wanted to open new businesses along El Camino.

Open Space and Parks
- When I started as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, I introduced the concept of having open space guidelines for residents-- three acres per 1000 residents. As a result, thirteen years later, these goals are still being used to identify where parks are needed in the city.
- I support a large community park in the Whisman neighborhood.
- I advocate the expansion of the Stevens Creek, Permanente Creek and Hetch Hetchy trails. I embrace thru my cyclist friends’ advocacy, the Permanente Creek Trail Bridge over 101 and Old Middlefield Way for safe access to the city.
Healthy City and Economy
- I never take for granted the revenue needed to fund the infrastructure, services, great employees and capital needed to build, and rebuild our city. I had recommended municipal revenue planning as a council goal for three years. This year the goal was accepted by council. MV is now planning how to insure meeting revenue objectives, rather than assuming our income magically increases.
- I have supported for-profit and non-profit organizations in their success in MV. I introduced proposals such as DeAnza College’s Civic Partnership program and the move of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to Mountain View when they were looking to move to another city. I meet with start-ups and leaders of industry located in MV and those interested in re-locating. I am supportive of development that upgrades our older commercial development to Class A status.
Responsible Budget - ALWAYS!
- During budget review meetings, you can count on me to ask tough questions after sifting through the maze of multiple budget categories on income and expense.
- Not just a rubber stamp but a voice for clarification. No automatic approvals here.
